Jewish American History - Social Discourse

Social Discourse

in Newport, Rhode Island, proceeds on terms of social equality in the 18th Century. Here are two examples:

When visiting Palestinian- born Rabbi Haim Isaac Carigal preaches a Shavuot sermon, many Christians are invited to the synagogue. One guest, Reverend Ezra Stiles, notes in his diary that Rabbi Carigal's oration, elocution, and gestures were fine and oriental. It was very animated.

In the note at the bottom, the Brinley family responds to the Lopez family invitation to a Thursday morning social function.
