Jewish American History-Museum exhibit-Builders of America

Jewish American Tavern Keeper
Abigail Minis (1701-1794), the Colonial matriarch, arrived in Georgia in 1733, one of the first white women to settle in that colony. After her husband's death, she took over the management of his ranch, store, and tavern. In October, 1779, she petitioned the Loyalist governor, Sir James Wright, for permission to leave Savannah. As a Whig, she preferred going into exile and left British-controlled territory for Charleston, South Carolina.
