UNEMPLOYED SECRET AGENT LOOKS FOR WORK

HYAM SOLOMON, a Jewish immigrant from Poland serves as a secret agent in British occupied New York City.

In1778 the British discover that he is helping French and American prisoners to escape and is persuading Hessian mercenaries to desert.

Before they can arrest him as a spy he flees to Philadelphia leaving behind a wife and one month old baby and belongings worth about five thousand pounds. In this letter he writes to the Congress for work. Later he becomes a major fundraiser for the revolutionary cause. Click on the letter for an enlarged image.
