THE MERCHANT NAVY OF AARON LOPEZ

He owned over one hundred ships including both coastal and ocean going and gave them all to the service of America.

Known as "The Merchant Prince of New England" he had come from Portugal to Newport, acheived financial success and a respected standing in the community. He laid the cornerstone for Touro Synagogue and he founded Leicester Academy.

After the war and the end of the British occupation of Newport. He was on his way back to his former headquarters when his horse and carriage overturned killing him instantly.
